Something ain't right with your setup. The edit command has a few quirks, but it certainly works the way you're trying to work it. I do think that bringing things up here before committing yourself to bugzilla is the way to do things, but you might ask if anyone else has come across these anomalies rather than just saying "it. doesn't. work".
