I've looked into this further, and I've come around on this.

Mark Waddingham's comments in the BZ report spell it out well enough: checking the result after attempting to set a script provides everything that's needed to report script parsing errors.

This would seem to provide an immediate notification -- so what's the benefit of also sending a separate message to provide the same info?
