Yes, in reality, The files don't really move around. It only works when both locations are on the same volume. Just the references change. 'rename' makes sense viewed this way.

from the docs:
The rename command can be used to change a file's or folder's location only if the old and new locations are both on the same volume.

in unix, moving a file is the same thing as renaming... ;-)
