Ah, pointwise attributes. I wonderd what you meant by setting pointwise
values! I can't say I've ever used them. If I take your scene and go the SDS
Specs tab, all the points have a value of 0 0 0 for brushturner. I tried
changing them to no effect. If you go to the object's Col tab and select the brushturner channel for the entire object, and put 1 1 1 in there, you get a
result. It looks like the pointwise values for custom channels aren't
accessed in VSL.

Well blow me down I never knew that thing was there on the Col tab (only been playing with this for 3 years), and yes I confirmed your result. But I often use a pointwise assigned float channel to set scope, and I just confirmed it worked for the model I uploaded.

And they seem to work in the fish sample. I give up. I'll try something else.
