Personally, I give up on websites that take any time at all to load. I work from the basic idea that one very small animation per page is acceptable but since it will take a while to load I make sure the main text stuff covers the main points and the main links. If folk then want images that will take a while to load then no problem , they can go to those pages and should expect to wait for the things to show up. However I'm too lazy to provide thumbnail links for the most part so things could be improved on my image pages if I did that.
Just now my emails and internet load times are slow because of pipeline problems so I can't really tell if your site is faster than before or not. Again, personally I would not load a big picture on the home or index page. I never did anything with flash (I use animated gif's for movement) but I think maybe flash as a vector animation format might be the fastest there is.
