Ptex is interesting, but does not solve the modeling problem.
We need a definitive solution to rendering 3D images.
And what if there was no rendering needed, the scene would just be there.

Problems that needs to be solved.
-Unified way of modeling (for natural object, man made object, terrain, particles etc) all in one.
-Micro modeling could spare us the need of textures. (Modeling wood or marble etc.)
-Animation deformation should not need any rig.
-Rendering should include all natural light phenomenon without any settings and in realtime.
-We need true rendering : from light to the camera lens.

I think the solution would be between voxel, subdiv and pointcloud.
An ultra simple algorithm would aloud computation from light to lens.

Imagine if instead of using 2D texture, each polygon of a model would link to 3D model recursively.

Ptex is the first step toward polygon self awareness of relation in the mesh.
This is an important step toward a modeling evolution.

If I'm right something like this or this (Ptex)
will maybe be in 3D-Coat in a future version, too.

Interesting way to completly ignore UV mapping.
Instead make 1 texture per polygon.
