I have the default Ubuntu karmic and RS7 and the fonts are working as
expected.

Hmm... it doesn't crash for me (on Debian Lenny) but it doesn't
seem to work either; an outline object is created but it's not
visible. I get lots of the following messages on the terminal when
I try to create font objects:
