Sounds like a plan. My feature list proposal would be:

1 Automatic generation of preview images
        - Supporting at least JPEG, GIF, PNG and PDF files
        - Arbitrary size
        - Good quality
2 Crop tool to create clippings of pictures
        - GUI (something like http://tools.uvumi.com/crop.html)
        - Configurable for fixed width, height or ratio
3 On the fly asset management
- Easy selection of assets from within dialogs (current selection with links is fine from a technical point of view, but the usability could be improved) - Ability to add new assets from within a dialog: Many users have problems organizing their work the way that the first add the assets to the DMS and then link to them from the website. So creating web content and selecting/inserting assets to be used would correspond better to the natural workflow.

At the moment I cannot be the one throwing the spark because I know nothing about 4.1, STK and asset variations etc. But if someone points me in the right direction I'm sure I could contribute as well.

So it's no waste of time if the community starts to build one for the CE too?

I guess it's up to you to compare the small price of a license vs the time it'd take you to reimplement this ;)

Hm... did you change the pricing of EE? I don't remember seeing the small price you're mentioning ;-)

Whether or not the price is big or small the fact is many of us are using Magnolia in projects where buying EE is not an option and we need better automatic image resizing / cropping features!

I have contributed a little bit of work related to this in the past (Scale image tag, yuck) and would be happy to contribute again if we can agree on a small useful feature set. Been doing some work with 4.1 and the STK backend and it seems like some of the groundwork has been laid (Asset variations?) and the CE version has do-nothing placeholders for things actually implemented in EE. Takes a while to understand what the EE developers had in mind but I'm sure we can do it.
