Running on ubuntu (all versions from feisty to karmic) with derby, up to
4 instances in same tomcat all the time.

/etc/security/limits.conf set to
*               hard     nofile          400000
*               soft     nofile          400000

/etc/sysctl.conf
fs.file-max = 400000

I don't think I ever had to change anything else.
