Hello John! My understanding is that normally users are created with a special ACL allowing them to edit themselves. You can see this if you look at the Users repository in a JCR browser. (Each user should have a node "acl_users", with entries pointing to itself). Do your users have such ACLs? If not, this is likely the problem.
I would *not* add an ACL giving general write access to the user area for all users, as this will indeed permit users to edit or delete any user saved in that area, which is almost certainly not what you need.
