That's right. What's in the prototype is valid for the whole site and can be 
extended or overwritten in the template definitions. Unfortunately you can only 
overwrite node datas (i.e. the green cubes = atomic values). If you try to 
overwrite content nodes (the 3 stacked cubes, like the list of paragraph for 
instance) you will only extend them. Therefore if you only want the calendar to 
appear in the extras column of your home page you will have to remove all 
paragraphs in the extras area definition of the prototype and add the ones you 
want to each template definition.

P.S.: You could also have the certain paragraphs be autogenerated on your page, 
e.g. the calendar on the home page. But that's a different story.
