Any reason for creating public this way rather then installing new instance 
straight as public w/ all your custom modules containing templates and other 
code and then activating all content to it?
That guide above is meant for ppl who accidentally install author as public or 
the other way around and need to reconfigure it, not as a means to create 
public instance. There are other things that are different between author and 
public which are not mentioned there.

most likely because you set your domain in site definition, but didn't change 
the website mapping to point to your site root node.


You might want to go and re-read intro documentation about how Magnolia works, 
why it comes in multiple instances and how to develop and deploy your code.
