Try to add "ulimit -n 5000" to the startup script of tomcat to allow higher amount of open files. Specially if you are using Derby as a DB. Default (you can check that with "ulimit -n" or "ulimit -a" is 256 which might be too low if you are running 2 instances in same Tomcat.
