Right, I solved the remaining problems by simply downloading the binary distribution of Magnolia 5.0.4 and looking at the version numbers of the modules installed in the distribution and then declaring dependencies to exactly those version numbers ( this probably seems obvious to other people, but it didn't occur to me for ages). The issues I was having before were that some module version I was declaring weren't compatible with the versions of other modules. While I was writing the request above for a page listing compatible version numbers it occurred to me to just look at the binary, and that worked. Hope this helps someone else.
