For me this one is really simple: it's better exactly because it's [b]not[/b] a "new forum". The StackExchange sites are best labeled as Q&A sites I guess. When I hear "forum" I think "phpBB" and feel 15 years younger ;-) I think this thread shouldn't turn into a general discussion why StackExchange sites are so successful and why they are considered so superior to forums by many. There are tons of resources on the Internet that cover that. So, apart from what the OP listed I'd only like to add that you can define your own email notifications based on question's tags.
