Yes, I'm sure it can be done. I'm just not that savy with using CSS like
this.

The mods you suggested worked, and I can offset and overlap the
sub-menus.

I stuck a test menu out here if you want to check it out...

http://www.ahouse4you.org/menu/css_menu.html

The problems I'm trying to iron out are..

When I hover the main menu items, I have to hover the text, rather
than the whole item, to trigger the display action.

When I hover the main menu items, the padding on top and bottom
doesn't change to the active color.

The sub-menus are inheriting the arrow image, but shouldn't. I created
a 1px x 1px 'no_arr.gif' image to insert in place of the arrow, on
hover, but that didn't help get rid of them.

The sub-menus are inheriting the white borders above and below the
items, but shouldn't.

The sub-menus should have white text and #4c70b3 (gray-blue)
background when not active.

The sub-menus should have #003366 (dk blue) text and #ffff99 (yellow)
background when active.

I can't get rid of the margin above and to the left (and probably on
the remaining sides too). When I nest it in a column, I may or may not
want margins, so would need control of them.

I fear that if I succeed in defining the level2 and above menus
differently, I'll wind up with the problem with overlaps being blocked.

This version is based on what seoconsultants is doing...

http://www.ahouse4you.org/menu/css_menu5.html

The fonts are too big, but you can see what colors I'm trying to do. I'm
trying to get used to 'em'. If I offset and overlap the sub-menus, the
overlaped part gets blocked because of stacking.

Well I'm 100% sure you can achieve the same as
http://www.seoconsultants.com/css/menus/vertical/ using the suckerfish
CSS.

If you're still having problems, post an url here and I'll have a look
at your code.
