have you checked if the two users on the old/new instances have the same password? this is necessary for successfully activation.
Thanks for your quick reply. I believe this is the case, both versions allow the default 'superuser' user, with password 'superuser', i.e. you can log in on both author instances with it. I do the activation while I'm logged in as 'superuser'. Is there way to check whether this is the problem, is there probably a logfile that might reveal a 'password incorrect' message?
