Personally, I prefer the look of the first (standard glass material) image.  

I'd consider looking at casting some caustics on the wooden surface.  You 
might want to graft a small but relatively high-res spline mesh patch in to 
the wooden surface to receive the caustics, as opposed to specifying the 
entire wooden surface to receive the caustics.
