I had forgotten about this issue but I have also experienced the 'dark 
faces' problem and it seemed due to one or two polys getting corrupted in 
some manner.  It was often not the darkened poly that was corrupt but one 
adjacent or close to it.

I seem to remember issues with both duplicated polys and duplicated vertices 
within a poly seeming to be responsible.

I think I just had to resort to deleting and then recreating individual 
polys in the region of the darkened polys, one at a time, until I hit the 
problem one - it was a bit of a time-consuming hit or miss affair.
