After trying countless combinations....I found that it is not my
machine specific problem, as I was finally (whew...!) able to compile
(following your instructions....thank you very much :-)) and that
version is 2.6.23-rc5 stable.

After the successful steps, I used the same steps for the linus git
tree, and it failed.   So ok, in the same machine, i have at least one
success.   Let me continue further now....thanks!!!
