note that by default, ro mounts of ext3 can write to the filesystem. if you force a true ro mount (i.e. where the kernel may not write to the device) then the mount will fail if there are uncommitted journal entries. cf. http://www.mail-archive.com/tsl-discuss@lists.trustix.org/msg04688.html -- Good judgement comes from experience.
