Hi Michael, No, the answer does not remain for CouchDB. It remains only for relatinal databases as far as I know. The couchdb architecture is exactly to store binary files of any kind as attachments to documents inside of the database files of couchdb itself. It makes no sense to store files outside of the couchdb database file because the internal structure how documents and attachments are being stored is a nearly perfect implementation which also cover attached files during replication.
