Hans tried to work with Gant to achieve his build goals and fairly
quickly realized it wasn't going to work as the code execution semantics
of Gant were too simplistic to do what was needed. So he started Gradle
based on the two-stage, "build a DAG, then work with it" model.

Hans had a branch in the Gant Subversion repository experimenting with a
proposal for Gant 0.4. This doesn't seem to have made it into the Git
repository -- which is sad -- but the old Subversion repository is still
around so it is findable. From there you can see the beginnings of
Gradle. Also http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GANT/Development+Ideas

Gradle has developed a magnificently long way since then, but the core
philosophy was already taking shape.
