Hummmm... the hb is different, not sure why, nor why what works for me
doesn't work for you, but what works for you works for me. I guess
GitWeb needs to sort itself out. Of course the URL encodes a specific
commit, whereas it would be good to say HEAD.

Works for me as well. Pity there isn't something more restful!

I think Peter could usefully make that an example idiom somewhere -- is
there a place for such Gradle things?

I am very much into parsimonious code, DRY is for people with resources
to spare.

My background is a) ancient machines where you were lucky if you had 4kB
of main memory and 2.5MB hard disk; b) embedded systems with 128kB of
flash and 4kB RAM -- though these are now 1MB flash and 16kB RAM. DRY
is just not enough in these situations.

To be honest I find the modern attitude, especially in Java and IDE
circles of "just go out and buy 4GB more main memory and a 2TB hard
disk" to be objectionable and offensive. Software developers seems to
have lost the philosophy of being frugal with resources. Maybe I am too
old for the "disposable, buy more" society beloved of vendors.
