It sounds more like you are starving your connection. You need to look at all
these vectors, (Router, Switch, Server and Firewall) through put. I am
betting this is a hardware issue in the network. Biggest killer is a CAT5
unshielded cable slowing the whole thing down.

What I am not seeing your description:

1. Virtual technology (VMware, Xenserver, KVM, Hyper-V (MS))
2. How many connections
3. Model of Sonicwall (for throughput)
4. Do you have virtual tools installed ?
5. What OS is the guest
6. Ram allocated, Disk, number of CPUs.

The biggest killer in virtualization is inodes if your running on a 7500 RPM
drive vs 10K RPM drive or a 15K RPM drive and how many vs SSD, then in SSD
is it enterprise or consumer grade.  Anything less than 5 drives on a
spindle your performance will feel really slow.  

There are a lot of factors people do not take in to account when deploying
virtualization.
