Ok, after battling for a day with this, I found an old thread where you mention guacamole.war should be in /var/lib/tomcat/webapps.

I moved it there from /etc/guacamole and it works now.
No idea why it was there as I was using that script.

Also, the Connexions did indeed not appear when nested in a group in 1.4.0 : they do appear now in 1.5.4.

There's nothing about adding a connection to a connection group that would prevent you from editing it.

The only thing I can think of is that you're logged in as a user that does not have admin rights and only has access to the Balancing Group - in this case, you'd be able to see the balancing group, but not the connections. Make sure you're logged in as an admin user.

Beyond that, you might try upgrading to the 1.5.4 release and see if that helps.
