That actually just occurred to me, and it seems to work. However, it does leave me with one undesirable side effect - an empty .m2 directory is created on systems that don't have one. Is this a known issue, and is there a workaround? To me, it seems like a regression from 2.2.11 - there I was able to have .m2 as a repo without it being populated or the directory created...
