You might want to take a look at this wiki page:

I have used the script from qmax with success (on the wiki page above).
If you are using 1.4 you might want to look at webDAV
(http://wiki.apache.org/lenya/HowToEditWithWebDAV). I use an xp web
folder to drag and drop new documents into my publication via webdav
(haven't tried it with other webdav clients though).
