I have never used FreeBSD, and I would hope that it wouldn't make any
difference
if SOURCE or BINARY version, but to be on the safe side you might
want to
compile the SOURCE.
BTW.. installing from the ports, means compiling the sources,
after perhaps applying some patches if that's the case..
for binary installations, use pkg_add
