(browser tabs in firefox, whole browser firefox/ie, xml editors, even

This is quite embarrassing, because when this error happens, the
document switches into some ghost state, i.e all its menus options are
greyed, and I can't get rid of it anymore, not even by restarting the
container.
Unfortunately I don't have the luxury to use a linux box just to "fix"
this error.
