WARNING: 1.4.x is considered unstable and we do not have a fixed release day for a first rc!!! ...but I think that this day is just around the corner. ;-) Anyway I do *NOT* recommend to use 1.4.x in production!!!
Short answer: It would be a good idea for development, because it seems we solved most of your needed features already in 1.4.x. You should use the svn HEAD version of 1.4.x (TRUNK).
