it takes something like 30 seconds to load and the system load as reported by uptime jumps from 0.01 to something like 5.00.
Do you notice if this is Apache or MySQL?
top says it's apache. Also, when I restart Apache, the problem goes away for a short while

It looks like the issue I had. What versionf of kernel, apache, mysql, and php
you have? And what are reading of CPU load: user, sys, idle and wait when load
avg rises?

Kernel: 2.6.18-4-686
Apache: 2.2.3-4
MySQL: 5.0.32-Debian_7etch1-log
PHP: 4.4.4-8+etch3

I'm not sure about the load tuff, but here' the output from uptime and mpstat:

12:01:15 CPU %user %nice %sys %iowait %irq %soft %steal %idle intr/s 12:01:15 all 2,43 0,02 0,51 9,98 0,12 0,01 0,00 86,93 283,67

uptime:

 12:01:18 up 25 days, 2:22, 1 user, load average: 2.67, 5.46, 6.00

Bye,
