OK, I figured out the answer to the second question: the files are installed in mysterious places because of the Installer instructions for the roles. But ... um ... is there any way to configure that? Or do I need to patch Midgardsql.xml and Mgdschema.xml if I want them in other places? (And for that matter, why are the wrong paths listed in the package.xml to begin with?).
