The protocol doesn't have to be eager of course. While traditional DSMs have tried to maintain an abstraction similar to real memory, there's no reason why Neo couldn't have a protocol that sacrifices immediate consistency for scale. The Gigaspaces guys reckon they have a very scalable solution with their Linda-ish Javaspaces kit so it should be possible to do the same for Neo.
