My recommendation for Windows users is to stick with Linux in a VM container(we standardized on Ubuntu/VirtualBox for ease). Alternatively you can sign up for Amazon's AWS, and new accounts have free access to "micro" sized EC2 instances. They can struggle with large data sets but could get you up and running for research.
