Guessing from the name this is no shared library, but some kind of
plug-in, namely an password authentication module for ldap. Is there an
pam_ldap.a ?

I think so. You have /lib/security added to /etc/ld.so.conf? ldconfig
isn't recursive.

Again, that should be no problem, because this is an additional moudle
allowing LDAP to access the local user database. What I'm wondering
about is that some kind of error number reporting function gets
extended there.
I would try compiling ldap without he PAM module support, trying if it
works then. If yes, you should ask the openldap / padl.com guy's about
this. If no, we'll see :)
