as david told me :)

install php4 and any development package (debian's php4-dev) - not sure about
rpms...

install midgard lib,mod (or over an existing install)
have a look on the midgard site for the cvs instructions 
cvs co midgard/php4-module

cd midgard/php4-module

/mkall

this will put midgard.so into the php module directory,
then modify the php4.ini file to add extension=midgard.so

have a play with the old admin site - it should work, asgard and the new
framed admin I think still have problems as they use snippets...

the other post included hints - if you find more - post them 

if you get stuck theres often somebody on irc.
