I use the "abstract" field for my articles - so on the front page, it'll
show the article title, the author and the abstract. Then, it has a link
to /articles/$topic/$subtopic/$article->name - and /articles is an "active
page" which does the article lookup...

There is an "approved" date field. You could use PHP to set that to a
date in the future, and then when you are building a list of articles to
show, and check $article->approved < $now (not sure of the syntax!),
before showing it.
