It's not different from setting up PHP with other extensions. What have
you tried so far.

Huh? What install script does RPM checks?

I haven't experienced that it is necesary to stop & start mysql. When
compiling
new apache modules (or even installing mod_perl modules) one must stop
and start apache, not restart. It's a known apache issue, and there's
nothing
we can do about that.
