edit a file called /etc/my.cnf (make it if it doesnt exist)

it should contain (at least)

[mysqld]
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

[client]
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

this file should be created when starting mysql..
