Well, that was David's recommendation. We had 3-4 Chat sessions on this 
and the final point was, that I couldn't connect to the DB because any 
time mod_midgard was accessing it, I got a segfault:- maybe David can 
add some details here ... We checked this with either the standard suse 
7.1 apache 1.3.16 RPM and with the latest 1.3.19 - same results.

Just forwarded my mail to Suse to David. Yep, I heard, thatt their RPMs 
are somewhat "strange" (8+3 DOS naming etc.) compared to other dists ...

David, I just grabbed the src.rpm and will try this one again, thanks. 
But I am a bit more careful now  -lost 5 hrs in re-creating my whole 
apache setup  ;-)
