Actually there are now RPMs available of pretty recent 1.4.1 (if I only
remember where), while I'm not sure if they're binary they still should
configure and compile by themselves.

As for the installation from sources, Debian sometimes might need a
little attention but not often (besides my troublematic system was
special) otherwise compiling from sources should be pretty
straigthforward as long as you compile the midgard-lib first and install
the data package last (read the install file for configure options, the
defaults might not a) work for you b) have everything you want/need,
other than that it's just "$./configure", "$make", "#make install")

I'd suggest using the php4 version of midgard-php.

Don't be afraid of source distribution Midgard, even the CVS snapshots
usually
compile without a hitch.

You might want to wait for the release of 1.4.2 if you are patient and
don't wish to use a CVS snapshot (I'm tonight or tomorrow upgrading to
the latest snapshot [now I have a snapshot that is about two months old,
works like charm apart from few bugs I just noticed] I can then mail you
how it went).
