I'm not arguing for or against that point. Technically, it's not
possible to to name-based virtualhosting without a front-end <>
back-end setup. I haven't thought about the merits or drawbacks of the
approach -- that's up to the person implementing (or not) this.
Depending on where you host, it may not be feasible to get extra IPs.

I remember it being a royal pain to claim extra IPs when I
administered the Uni network -- it was said to be easier to run for
the board of directors, then claim IPs/network drops for whatever was
your fancy at the time, than it was to get one on technical merits.
