Hmmmm... Would the dev team appreciate a hand in this matter...

As I said, I'm a systems engineer, and have considered and looked at several methods.

I can't code C for toffee, just can't get into C at all... but i have several ideas 
that may help?

It's not currently possible. It's a good idea, but we're struggling a
bit with how to implement it cleanly. The issue of pervasive softlinks
has been discussed on and off but we never got to a good resolution.
We _are_ definately interested in softlinks, but I'd hate to add a
situation-specific hack that comes to haunt us later.
