I usually run (a.o.) apache benchmark (ab) after making changes to make sure it
holds under load. I don't really look at the numbers it returns, just at
the apache logfiles.

General platform-, apache- and mysql-tweaking applies. That said, MMP does
limited fragment caching and I've been seeing performance improvements,
benchmarked against the well-known "Works For Me" industry-standard
benchmark suite. IOW, you'd have to see what the results are for your
