I can see cookies set that begin with "auth_session, auth_checksum1,
auth_checksum2. There is no NemeinAuthentication*.
I looked for cookies in Galeon via its GUI. Is there any other place I
may search for?

auth_session and auth_checksum are good names too (means the cookies are at least set, can you send full data on those cookies ?), though I distinctly remember changing the cookie names (need to check that one).

What was the hostname you use to connect to aegir ? There used to be problem in nemeinauth with non FQDN (Fully Qulified Domain Name) hosts (like: localhost, myhost, foobar) though it has been fixed and the aegir package should use the fixed version.
