One possibility would be the Pingback and Trackback protocols
from the blogging world:

http://www.movabletype.org/docs/mttrackback.html#sending%20a%20trackback%20ping

They're geared towards informing sites that they have been linked,
but same could be interpreted as a "tell me when you're updated"
request.
