As you know, with Open Source it is just about priorities. I'm
just a bit tied up with paying clients at the moment, and they
of course take precedence over any generic Midgard work.

Um... James is offering to pay/donate 'money'. Maybe the AUD isn't attractive to anyone... Perhaps it would help to know approximately how much...

All kinds of modules,
libraries and applications are out there, but it takes quite
much knowledge and work to bundle them together into a working
website.

Too true. It's not for the light hearted.

Midgard could and should be more useful out of the box.

We
should gather together a real "sample site", maybe built on
MidCOM, that would combine many of these modules in a sensible
way.

In essence, the sample site should be a production-ready
website/portal/intranet, where you just need to add your
logo (or layout), and write the real content.

Yep. All the things James mentioned. Nuke on Midgard. Polls, Forms, Mail a Friend, etc. It only takes a quick search with google to turn up the PHP for this kind of thing. Understanding how it should mesh with Midgard requires inside help.

I think it wouldn't even require much effort, and would make
Midgard a much better alternative to all those who want to
get something working quickly instead of developing a big
project from ground up.

Who would be interested in helping me with this process?

Absolutely. Show me the way and I'll do anything I can but as you know I'm still a little wet behind the ears :D.

We should actually develop this "sample site" using CVS
and rest of regular Midgard app development methodologies,
so it would also get maintained (unlike all the current
example stuff)...

But where does this leave Aegir? Are you talking about an Aegir plug and play sample site or a generic Midgard site? To what extent can one be used with the others?

Where does Aegir currentl fit into the Midgard development program. I hear it's the best interface for newbies to date but it still not 100% in itself.
