You will at least need to understand Linux synatx and mechanics. Once you
have the basics you've find out there's a whole new world of software
available to you.

If you want a baptism by fire, find a spare pc and install Redhat - there
are other Linux distros but they are too easy to install, you don't get
forced into learning things. It's a good idea to have a purpose to install
RH, as Linux configurations are generally application specific - there's
really no default RH installation. I installed Mapserver just to have a
sample application as a goal. It took four weeks to get the box going and
the application running. But I learned the mechanics, syntax and the
paradigm of compiling support libraries. Building in php and mysql two
different ways was a good experience too. Make sure you read the Midgard
install docs carefully with respect to those two, btw, it has a dependency
on a particular installation mode, cgi I think(?).
