Step #3 - Should have asked...sigh, not reading the manual... http://www.privaterra.org/blog-rg/not_reading_the_manual.html
Not reading the manual...
01/09/05 -- Starting a new day, I woke up remembering that there is still a -significant- issue related to host name resolution with the new CMS that's running Privaterra's domain site. ...
So it looks like I've tried to update the name of my Midgard created host from www.privaterra.ca to .org and obtained mixed results. Obviously things aren't working as they should - I guess I was a bit impatient and should have consulted the Midgard guru's as I did yesterday morning.
There is the issue of a strange mapping problem that has all port 80 requests for some reason directed to some place that it's not supposed to.
Instead of following the configuration files in /etc/apache2/, which instruct apache to goto to specific directories (ie. /srv/www/ ), instead Midgard is re-directing all traffic to it's own directories . In my case, it's having apache go to the port 80 host I set up yesterday. Specifically - /var/lib/midgard/vhosts/www.privaterra.ca/80
People get a listing of the directory. Accessing that directory right now - all one sees is an entry for the midcom-static directory.
This is quite strange.
What to do - well, a possible solution would be to create symbolic links to the two main EXISTING directories in /srv/www that handle the postnuke and twikiwiki files.
ln - s /srv/www/tikiwiki tikiwiki ln -s /srv/www/postnuke postnuke
ok. with the symbolic links now in place, existing domain names (not the new ones setup in midgard) now see a directory listing with midcom-static and the two symbolic directories I have setup.
this has me thinking that placing an index.html file here might do something as well . Perhaps a small index file with all but a redirect would allow users wanting to access my one key site - cms.privaterra.org - to access it.
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Redirect to new page</TITLE>
<meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="2; URL=http://cms.privaterra.org/tikiwiki/">
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<div>The Privaterra website is undergoing a major revision. You will be redirected to the new location of the page you referenced automatically 2 seconds after load.
If this redirect fails, you may <a href="http://cms.privaterra.org/tikiwiki/"> go to the new page manually</a>.</div>
</BODY>
</HTML>
again, I restart apache - and am happy to report that accessing the cms.privaterra.org domain results in the redirect WORKING!
yea!
So i try one last thing, to see if I can change the website definition for the site I setup for Midgard yesterday - www.privaterra.ca - to the domain name that I actually want, - www.privaterra.org -
Seeing I'm still a Midgard novice I fear that doing something without having read the manual might lead me into - unexpected - results. I must admit, I never really read manuals and tend to figure out how things work really easily.
But how would I change the domain name in midgard? Thinking about it, I remember that I was asked for a domain name when I created the domain in question. Perhaps if I log in as Admin, and look around I might be able to find the existing definition and just change it. Perhaps it's that easy?
So I do the following:
- log into Aegir as admin - Select - Websites - In the Websites section, click on the www.privaterra.org Site - Details - Change the Name from :
www.privaterra.ca
TO www.privaterra.org
- Click Submit
Well that seems to work, as the name of the website has now changed to - www.privaterra.org -
Accessing the domain with my browser doesn't have me hit the index.html i created above. I don't get re-directed - but instead see the Midgard site i build last night...
So all looks fine - however, let's take a closer look...
Going back to the Websites section, I click on Roots/Website, the entry for www.privaterra.ca is still there, and is now proceeded by two *
- Entering into Aegir as the site admin (not master Midgard admin), reveals that - www.privaterra.ca is still in the website listing, and as above is proceeded with two *.
So it looks like I've tried to update the name of my Midgard created host from www.privaterra.ca to .org and obtained mixed results. Obviously things aren't working as they should - I guess I was a bit impatient and should have consulted the Midgard guru's as I did yesterday morning.
I will send them a short note by email asking them to read this blog, and hope that sometime in the next few days they can help me fix the **'s in the Website section and correctly change the domain name.
I'll keep you posted. -- ### Robert Guerra <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Privaterra - <http://www.privaterra.org>
